Brown Dog Gunsmithing, located in Athol, Idaho, is a full service gunsmith shop offering everything from minor repairs and maintenance to full blown custom gun work. I work on rifles, shotguns, and handguns.

By choosing Brown Dog Gunsmithing for all of your gunsmithing needs you can expect quality work, at fair and affordable prices, a reasonable turn around time for each job, and last but not least friendly service. I believe in doing as much work as possible in house. I feel this ensures the highest quality control and gives you the customer the best possible product. You can feel confident that your firearm will be taken care of and the job completed with the utmost concern for quality throughout each step of the process. Visit the Meet the Gunsmith page to learn a little more about my credentials and ideals.

Brown Dog Gunsmithing offers a wide variety of services. Here is a list of some of the major things I am set up to do:

This is a very abbreviated list. Visit the Services page for more information, and detailed descriptions of some of the services offered. If your gunsmithing needs are not covered contact me (Hunter@browndoggunsmithing.com) I may still be able to help.

99% of my work is done in house by me. I feel this ensures the highest quality control and gives you the customer the best possible product. If I cannot provide the service I will tell you up front. If I know a good source for a service I cannot provide I will be happy to suggest it to you, and happy to send the firearm out for you for such services. This does not happen very often, but there are some specialized jobs that are better to send out. Again you will know that I will be sending it out. I have chosen shops for these particular services that I am completely confident in.

At Brown Dog Gunsmithing, you will find affordable, fair, and reasonable prices. You may not find the cheapest prices here, but ask yourself this; if you get what you pay for do you really want to take you gun project to to the guy with the cheapest prices? I don't tote cheap prices, but I do feel my prices are affordable and fair. At Brown Dog you won't pay over and above for average jobs. Average gun repair and typical firearms maintenance is affordable, and I believe my prices for custom gun work (ie barrel jobs, stock work, etc) are fair. Visit the View My Work page to see some photos of my custom gun work. I think you will agree after you see my quality gun work that yes sometimes you do get what you pay for, and when it comes to custom gun work you will definitely get your moneys worth at Brown Dog Gunsmithing. After viewing my work, visit the Pricing page to get an idea of what your gunsmithing project might cost. If you would like an estimate for a custom rifle visit the Custom Rifle Quote page to have an estimate emailed to you.

Turn around time varies. I will make every effort to get your gun project back to you in a timely manner. Keep in mind that custom gun work takes time! If you are spending your hard earned money on the custom rifle of your dreams you likely do not want me to rush the job. Everything on a custom rifle has to be just right, and just right takes time. I may have time to repair your trusty rifle or shotgun right before opening day but please don't expect to have a custom rifle built, for your trip to Alaska, on a months notice. Neither you nor I will be happy with the outcome.

There are several factors that affect turn around time. Here are the major ones to keep in mind:

  • Size and scope of the project (gun cleaning and gun repair vs. custom rifle job)
  • Availability of gun parts for gun repair or components for your custom gun project
  • The number of customers in front of you
  • Time of year (August and September are by far my 2 busiest months. Hunting season is coming!)
  • Can it be done in house (99% of the work I do in house but some specialty jobs are better sent out.)
I will try to give you an idea of turn around time, but I won't be held to my estimate. There are just too many variables. I will also try my best to help you in an emergency, but please plan ahead when possible. There are far more customers with emergencies than there are those who plan ahead.

Besides quality work, I have built Brown Dog Gunsmithing around exceptional customer service. I believe that there is not enough customer service out there today, thus I have tried very hard to make customer service a top priority. I will try to answer any questions you may have about your gunsmithing project to the best of my ability. Feel free to email questions to Hunter@browndoggunsmithing.com, but please limit questions to subject matter pertinent to your gunsmithing needs. This will help me respond to questions in a timely manner. Response time for emails generally runs about 48 hours. I ask that you include a phone number so that I may call to respond to topics requiring a lengthy discussion of details. If I cannot answer your question I will let you know or I will refer you to someone who can, if I have a good source for the required information. Please visit the Contact page for more information.

In addition to the gunsmithing services offered at Brown Dog Gunsmithing, gun sales are available by special order.
